The Difference Between a Production Report and True Real-Time Visibility in Steel Fabrication

In most steel fabrication plants, the same scenario plays out almost every day.

The factory owner or operations manager asks what appears to be a very simple question:

“Where are we with the project?”

The answer is rarely a precise figure or a clear picture. More often, it is an estimate.

“We’re about 70% done.”

“Cutting is progressing, but welding is slightly behind.”

“There’s only a little work left before painting.”

“We should still be able to meet the delivery date.”

These answers are not the result of negligence or poor performance. They are honest attempts to understand the situation.

But they are still estimates.

The problem is that these estimates do not remain casual statements. Critical decisions are made based on them. Delivery dates are confirmed, production teams are placed under pressure, new projects are accepted, and additional materials may be ordered—all based on an incomplete picture.

Eventually, everyone turns to the “production report” as the main reference point.

It may be an Excel file, a spreadsheet updated at the end of the day, a presentation, or even a verbal update during a quick meeting.

Reports, by their nature, are delayed, consolidated, and focused more on the past than on the present.
